Wellington, FL (December 30, 2020) – Whether gearing up for a Grand Prix or hacking a young horse, you can never be too careful. Equestrians now have at their fingertips an amazing array of protection and ways to minimize injury, even in the case of extreme falls. Advancements in technology and materials have given rise to the next generation of in saddle protection, and Chilean Grand Prix rider Gabriela Reutter of Lumiere Sporthorses has boosted her safety quotient by partnering with Helite Airbags. Designed originally for high speed and severe impact motorcycle accidents, Helite’s brand has been synonymous with safety for over 18 years, and recently branched out into the equine disciplines. With her Helite Airbag from Hansen Distribution, Reutter’s ability to perform at the highest level and with the highest level of safety are no longer mutually exclusive.
Reutter’s international level show jumping career has blossomed into CSI4* competition, and like any rider at that level she has experienced her fair share of spills. While helmets are ubiquitous and required throughout the competition arenas, other methods of protection are slowly growing in popularity. Helite’s superior level of protection and convenience are what set their air bags apart. Triggered by a chord that snaps discreetly to the saddle, if the rider is ejected the bag inflates in microseconds, delivering cushion from the skull to the base of the spine and the circumference of the ribcage. Varying models of Helite’s vest can cover the entire skull, or fit perfectly under a show coat.
“Knowing that I have this added measure of protection makes me more confident in the saddle,” said Reutter. “It is slim and not restrictive, which is incredibly important. A simple canister change and the vest is ready to use immediately, and provides the ultimate in impact protection. I put it to the test recently, when I came off during training and it felt like landing on a mattress. Helite has really delivered the future of equestrian protection.”
Reutter’s passion for equestrian sport began at a young age, and has since taken her to the upper echelons of show jumping. Combining talent, horsemanship, and dedication to her dreams, she rides with the aspiration of representing Chile at the pinnacle of show jumping sport. Born in Santiago, Chile, Gaby began riding at only four years old. At 17, she moved to the United States to pursue a professional show jumping career. Since 2014, she has ridden under the guidance of Olympic Gold and Silver Medalist Chris Kappler, and is completing her undergraduate degree in Economics and Business Studies at NYU.
To date, Gaby has multiple top finishes in international FEI classes, from the U25 Grand Prix divisions to victory in an FEI 4-star event. She currently campaigns her two show jumpers, Atticus Diamant (aka Monty) and Maharees Rock (aka Rocky), at the FEI level. Both had excellent results during WEF 2020, and you can read more about Gaby’s horses here. Her international equestrian CV also includes Spruce Meadows, The Hampton Classic, and several junior/young rider South American Games. In 2018, Reutter received her certificate of capability for the Pan American Games following a top 3 finish in the FEI 3-star 1.50M Captive One Classic.
